Back when Anthony was 3 years old, and we started biomedical intervention, Dr. Sletten tested Anthony’s thyroid. His TSH levels came back elevated. Dr. Sletten told us to go see a pediatric specialist for his thyroid. We did this. The doctor, whom I remember not really liking, told me that while Anthony’s levels were high, that we shouldn’t be “too concerned”, and we should just keep an eye on it.
At the time, I was so overwhelmed with all of Anthony’s other health issues going on, his mass amount of sensory issues, his inability to speak, his GI issues, his OCD, that this 1 test result with a slight elevation, an elevation this dr told me I didn’t need to be concerned about, well it just wasn’t on the priority list at that moment. It should of been. =-(
As time went on, and Anthony started recovering from autism. his main issues disappeared He recovered all his speech and no longer required therapy of any sort anymore. No more sensory issues, no more GI issues. But his OCD well that has been an on going battle.
I started researching about OCD and suspected PANDAS. Dr. Sletten ran a strep titer test and his strep titers came back elevated. So we started treating with antibiotics. His OCD did improve with antibiotics for awhile. Homeopathy also helped for a little while, and things were good. But then Anthony came down with pneumonia……
He had a horrible time with that case of pneumonia. After a week of using Xeoponex ,we found it was more of an inflammation issue that was holding him back from recovery. So the doctors put him on Flovent. This is the same inhaler that Anthony was on for 2 years straight due to his premature lungs. Within a couple of days of being on Flovent, Anthony’s speech started tanking! I was freaking out!!! He was having a hard time getting his words out, and told us he couldn’t get the words out of his mouth that were in his head. With that one sentence, I stopped the Flovent. Thankfully it seemed the few days he was on it, had done the trick and he did recover from his pneumonia. But after that illness, things were just off. Does flovent effect the thyroid….. hmmmm I now wonder……. And apparently I’m not the only one.
His OCD was no longer under control. He was having really bad bouts of irritability. Not your normal child anger, but mood swings that seemed to come out of no where, and based on nothing. He started saying awful things. Telling us to chop off his hands, that he wanted to die. That I should hit him. These behaviors scared me so much. This was not my Anthony.
I spoke with Anthony’s doctor many times over the past year. We tried a few different things. We increased his TMG, which helped a bit. His pediatrician said that his adenoids were really enlarged, and were probably holding a lot of bacteria, so perhaps getting the adenoids removed would help.
But no, as soon as Anthony came off the antibiotics the OCD and irritability returned with vengeance. His teacher from school was even concerned because she noticed a change in Anthony as well. I asked his pediatrician if we could run a full immune system panel. So $300 later, after many many immune system tests, only one thing came back abnormal……… his thyroid. His TSH was elevated again, just like it was when he was 3 years old. Sooooo, here we were again! His pediatrician said that while it was elevated, he didn’t think it was something we needed to treat. However maybe I should take my child to a psychiatrist. Ummmm no? No on soooooo many levels! Here my child had a abnormal test result, but a psychiatrist was the answer? No!!!
I knew I had to do something different. I had to find a different doctor. One that specialized in genetics, thyroid, and biomedical. My gut was just telling me since this same test had come back abnormal a couple times in Anthony’s life, I needed to peruse answers. Also now knowing that thyroid issues run the gamete on my husbands side of the family, this wasn’t just your random abnormal thyroid result.
My appointment with Dr. Catanzaro, from Health Coach 7 was amazing. We went over so much, and reviewed all of Anthony’s 23 and Me results, But in this blog post I’m focusing on what we spoke about regarding Anthony’s thyroid.
Genetically Anthony’s thyroid is concerning. Especially his SELENBP1 gene mutation. Your thyroid requires selenium to function, and with this gene not functioning, the body is not absorbing selenium efficiently. It can effect thyroid, kidneys and liver. Which in turn can cause neurological issues. SCARY right? Selenium levels can appear normal on blood tests, but the big question is, is the selenium being ABSORBED by the organs? With a SELENBP1 mutation, most likely it is not.
Before I started Anthony on selenium I did Wilson’s thyroid test I had read about on the internet regarding body temperature. The whole family did it, so Anthony wouldn’t feel self contentious. We made it into a game. We all took our temperatures 3 times through out the day and charted them. Anthony’s was abnormally low all through out the day. In the morning it was down to 96.8!!! WTF? Which is normally one of the main times he would have a melt down.
So per Dr. Catanzaro we started Anthony on some selenium.
With in a week I noticed his OCD had improved. And his mood was much improved as well. As the weeks have gone by things have got better and better. I have even noticed a new sense of maturity pop up. Just in the way he’s saying things and behaving. It’s been wonderful. And this past week, there has been no OCD at all! Anthony’s teacher says he’s back to his old self again, so I know it’s just not me wishful thinking. =-)
Check out this interesting study showing the link between selenium and OCD
In my next blog post I will talk about how we also put Anthony on a hypoglycemic diet plan, based on Anthony’s genetics. It has also been amazing. I’m pretty sure its been a combination of the selenium and new diet. As many who are hypothyroid, also are hypoglycemic.
Anthony has gained 5 pounds since we started this protocol. 5 pounds of which he could really use. He’s also been so skinny!
So we will continue this plan and see if it continues to be the answer. I am so hopeful! Hopeful that this will FINALLY be the answer to the OCD and irritability.
