For most of my sons life, he’s had puffiness under his eyes.
Anthony at 5 years old
It’s always seemed strange to me. Especially after I had my daughter, whom has never had puffy eyes. In this picture Anthony was 3.
Doctors in the past had always related the puffiness to allergies. Which Anthony has had. Food allergies, and environmental allergies. However I would notice when Anthony had a food infringement, or was having an allergic reaction to dogs, his under eyes would be puffy with a purple undertone But the food/environment reaction would come and go, the purple color would disappear…however the “normal” puffiness was always there.
Then our new discovery three months ago, happened. The THYROID DISCOVERY! And our new doctors really started pushing for more thyroid based testing. Which revealed high TSH, low iodine, and dysglycemia.
Yesterday was our follow up appointment with our new integrative pediatrician, and again we went over Anthony’s labs. She was in 100% agreement with Dr. Catanzaro. Which is such an awesome feeling. Two doctors agreeing about your childs care! She agreed with Dr. Catanzaron with starting an iodine supplement, since Anthony is low. We decided to use IThroid. As it contains Iodine AND Iodide. But I digress… back to the puffy eyes…. I will write a post about iodine later on. =-)
So I asked our pediatrician. “I know those with thyroid issues can also have eye issues. Anthony’s eyes have always been puffy underneathe. Is that related to thyroid?” She explained that yes, under eye puffiness is associated with hypothyroidism. So I started thinking. When did this thyroid mess really begin? I started looking back through old pictures. I looked at infant pictures and toddler pictures, his eyes were normal sometimes, but other times puffy. So I am thinking, his thyroid was having issues way back then. We know it was having issues by the time he was 3. I plan on contacting the hospital Anthony was born out and requesting his new born screening report. Because honestly, I have never seen it. I wonder if something came up, or was boarder line at the time.
Not normal, puffy
It will be interesting to see if the inodine supplement starts to correct his under eye swelling. I will be documenting it for sure and will keep you all updated. Does your child have under eye puffiness? If yes, you might want to look into thyroid being an issue.
